Pay for LTFT Trainees

The 'New' Pay Deal for LTFT trainees came into effect on 1 June 2005. Details can be downloaded from the NHS Employers website (www.nhsemployers.org). A summary and banding flow chart can be downloaded from here.

Currently full-time doctors and dentists are placed into bands depending upon the total hours worked and the intensity of work (see below). Similarly, there are LTFT training bands for those working less than 40 hours per week. All LTFT trainees should work less than 40 hours per week unless they are working reduced hours in a full-time slot. If working 40 hours per week or more a flexible trainee is paid on the appropriate band - either Band 1 (40-<48 hrs) or Band 2 (48-56 hrs).

Basic salary

The 'New' Pay Deal is one where the basic salary is determined by the actual hours of work (standard hours plus any out of hours worked).

Pay will be divided into divisions of four-hour bands of actual hours

F5 is 20 or > and < 24 hours of actual work a week and attracts 0.5

F6 is 24 or > and < 28 hours of actual work a week and attracts 0.6

F7 is 28 or > and < 32 hours of actual work a week and attracts 0.7

F8 is 32 or > and < 36 hours of actual work a week and attracts 0.8

F9 is 36 or > and < 40 hours of actual work a week and attracts 0.9

Supplements

A supplement is payable to trainees in addition to the above basic

Total salary = salary* + [salary* x 0.5 or 0.4 or 0.2]

*salary = F5 to F9 calculated as above.

LTFT Bands

These are defined differently to the December 2000 Pay Deal and are:-

• Band FA – trainees working at high intensity and at the most unsocial times.

• Band FB – trainees working at less intensity at less unsocial times.

• Band FC – all other trainees with duties outside the period 8am to 7pm Monday to Friday.

No supplement is payable if all hours worked are between 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday and are less than 40 hours per week.
