As a Foundation year doctor in the Emergency Department you'll have many opportunities to develop clinical knowledge & skills as well as learning about non-clinical aspects of medicine such as time management. Foundation year one doctors in the Emergency Department will often be involved with working on Clinical Decision Units (CDU's), where patients with ambulatory care conditions or short stay needs will be cared for. FY1 doctors will also have opportunities to see patients with consultant supervision of management plans & discharges.
FY2 doctors work as members of the multi-disciplinary team in the Emergency Department. Alongside nursing staff there are many other professionals working within the ED; radiographers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, Advanced clinical practitioners, Emergency Nursing practioners, primary care and elderly care physicians with specialist interests in the ED amongst many others. Gaining experience through clinical working, supervision by senior staff and departmental teaching will allow you to develop Emergency medicine specific and generic medical skills.
