Training Programme

There are 6 training units in the West Midlands:

  • Birmingham (5)
  • Coventry (2)
  • Shrewsbury (1)
  • Stoke on Trent (2)
  • Wolverhampton (3)
  • Worcester (2)

Brackets indicate the number of trainees in each unit. Taken collectively, the six units offer the full range of OMFS activity.

Worcester and Shrewsbury are busy units with significant skin oncology practices. Coventry, Wolverhampton and Stoke on Trent are all head and neck cancer centres. They also provide experience in trauma and deformity. Birmingham is also head and neck cancer centre, with skull base, cleft, craniofacial and the Centre for Defence Medicine. There is a very significant trauma practice, including military casualties.

Trainees spend at least five years rotating through 4 or 5 of the units. 2 years are usually spent in Birmingham. The rotations are decided at the start of the rotation, although flexibility is retained to meet individual requirements and the needs of the rotation in general. Trainees rotate annually at the beginning of April each year. There are recognised post CCT fellowship posts in aesthetic, cleft, craniofacial and head and neck surgery in the region. Trainees are exposed to multi-disciplinary team working throughout their training. Excellent facilities exist for research and educational higher qualifications and a number of recent trainees have completed or are currently undertaking PhD, MD or MMEd degrees.
