In the West Midlands, CT1s are expected to complete two 6 month placements in general adult psychiatry. This usually comprises of an inpatient and an outpatient post. Trainees can be posted to acute male/female wards, psychiatric ICUs as well as CMHTs (Community Mental Health Teams) and Assertive Outreach Teams (AOTs). This enables trainees to develop a broad based understanding of psychiatry.

In CT2 a placement in old age psychiatry is compulsory followed by a post in either CAMHs or LD. Trainees are able to indicate their preferences and the school will try to accommodate this as best as possible.

CT3 provides further opportunities to explore sub-specialities such as Forensics, Liaison psychiatry, Neuropsychiatry, Perinatal and Medical psychotherapy. If these are no provided within Trust, trainees can speak to their TPDs (Training Programme Directors) to arrange potential placements in other trusts within the deanery.
