Public Health Study Leave

Each registrar is entitled to 30 days of study leave per year, as well as study budget to cover related expenses. If the study leave involves no cost, then only the educational supervisor needs to approve it. However, if the registrar requires the reimbursement of expenses, then they must complete a study leave claim form which is available in the sidebar.

There are set rules for entitlement depending on whether or not you are doing the MPH, stage of training and for any compulsory training you need to attend.

Mandatory study leave includes:

  • New registrars’ induction
  • Diplomate exam (Part A) tutorials and mock exam
  • Final membership (Part B) mock exam
  • Multi-Source Feedback activities
  • Academic learning sets (University of Warwick)
  • Registrar regional training days
  • Any other mandated learning requirement agreed by the West Midlands School of Public Health

Other uses of study leave include:

  • UK-based courses and conferences
  • Examination-related private study time (max 10 days per year)
  • International courses and conferences (refer to separate study leave application)

Registrars appointed at ST1 do not need to apply for study leave in relation to any aspect of the MPH. ST1s will not have any additional study leave allowance for their year unless study leave is requested for examination-related private study/sitting days, or for study days otherwise mandated by West Midlands School of Public Health.

A study leave application which requires funding from your study budget should be completed at least four weeks before the first day of the study leave.

Please complete the Study Leave Application Form and await approval from your Educational Supervisor.

If approved, you will be reimbursed after the event.
