Continued professional development (CPD) payments for GP educators will be made to practices in December 2026, one off payment of £500 representing the whole year.
The GP Sshool in the West Midlands will make the appropriate payments via Primary Care Support England (PCSE) system. No invoices are required, and practices will be able to see these payments on their PCSE statement.
CPD eligibility
The CPD allowance is for approved GP educators only.
To qualify for these payments; GP educators must be:
Educational supervision claims for the financial year
2026-27 educational supervision
Education supervision payments are made automatically by the GP school; this means there are no invoices required. Practices should be able to see these payments on PSCE statement.
Educational supervision payments are made twice a year (currently March and September). The rates are £250 for each completed educational supervisor report (ESR) per ST1 and ST2 resident doctor.
The rate payment of £250 is for completing ESR reports, preparation work beforehand and with a commitment of keeping in touch with a resident doctor between reports.
ESR payment schedules are as follows:
- March 2026 to include ESRs for the period 3 August 2025 to 31 January 2026
- September 2026 to include ESRs for the period 1 February 2026 to 2 August 2026
- March 2027 to include ESRs for the period 3 August 2026 to 31 January 2027
Trainers' grants
Trainer grants for GP practices in the West Midlands will now be made at the end of each rotation (still every four months during ST3). Automatic payments will be made directly to the practice via the Primary Care Support England (PCSE) system, a daily rate will be applied pro rata, calculating the applicable trainers' grants based on the period the resident doctor is in the practice. This means there are no invoices required.
From 1 April 2024 the rate of payment has increased to £10,796.91 per annum with a daily rate of £29.58.
For FY2 trainees, the current reimbursement is a flat rate of £3,598.97 per four-month rotation.
Trainers' grant payments will be made during the following months and will include applicable trainer grants for all registrars and FY2 trainees:
- March 2026 to include TG for the period 4 December 2025 to 31 March 2026
- September 2026 to include TG for the period 1 April 2026 to 5 August 2026
- December 2026 to include TG for the period 6 August 2026 to 2 December 2026
- March 2027 to include TG for the period 3 December 2026 to 31 March 2027

If for example a trainee has left a placement early or been on sick leave for the placement therefore resulting in a change to the applicable trainer grant.
Trainer grants during resident doctor sick leave
The practice will not receive a trainer grant if a resident doctor is on long term sick leave. However, the GP school will support phased returns with no reductions made.
