Urology in the West Midlands
Higher Specialty Training (HST; ST3-7) in Urology in the West Midlands consists of annual rotations throughout training to a number of hospitals ranging from District General Hospitals to tertiary centres, offering exposure to core and specialist urological surgery, and serving a diverse patient population.
The West Midlands geographically is one of the largest deaneries in the country, serving a diverse patient population with similarly diverse pathologies. Trainees have the opportunity to work across a wide geographical area, spanning from Hereford to Shrewsbury, to Stoke, to Coventry, and the entire area encompassed within. There are three university hospitals based in Birmingham, Stoke on Trent and Coventry.
The rest of the West Midlands region contains beautiful countryside and boasts excellent communication and transport links to the rest of the country, including the development of the HS2 rail link with London, and motorway links through the M5, M6 and M42.
The specialty of Urology
Urology is one of the most dynamic and exciting specialties throughout not just surgery, but the whole of medicine, leading the way in the development, innovation, and adoption of new technologies (including robotic surgery and medical lasers) to enhance patient care.
Urology is considered a very research- and evidence-based specialty and affords numerous opportunities for Academia and clinical research.
The variety encountered throughout Urology is what attracts many doctors to this exciting specialty – benign and malignant pathologies across different organ sites; a diverse patient population from paediatric to geriatric; the breadth of elective and emergency work; the wide range of different clinical activities; and a number of different surgical techniques and approaches including open, laparoscopic, robotic and endoscopic surgery.
Multiple research and teaching opportunities exist, and multi-disciplinary working with many different healthcare professionals across various specialties is a necessity. Urology also has a high proportion of female trainees and consultants with the numbers progressively increasing.
