The GDC's recommended topics

As a dental professional you must plan your CPD activity as it relates to your field of practice during your CPD cycle.

To help and support to you in your CPD choices, the GDC has identified some CPD topics that will relate to many dental professionals in their field of practice. These are highly recommended to do as part of the minimum verifiable CPD requirement:

  • Medical Emergencies: at least 10 hours in every CPD cycle – and we recommend that you do at least two hours of CPD in this every year;
  • Disinfection and Decontamination: we recommend that you do at least five hours in every CPD cycle; and
  • Radiography and radiation protection: we recommend that you do at least five hours in every CPD cycle. This applies only to those who undertake radiography. If you are a dental technician you can do CPD in materials and equipment instead of radiography and radiation protection: at least five hours in every CPD cycle.

We also recommend that you keep up to date by doing CPD in the following areas:

  • Legal and ethical issues;
  • Complaints handling;
  • Oral Cancer: Early detection;
  • Safeguarding children and young people; and
  • Safeguarding vulnerable adults.

We make these recommendations because we believe regularly keeping up to date in these topics contributes to patient safety.

The enhanced CPD scheme is starting on 1 January 2018 for dentists and 1 August 2018 for dental care professionals.

The main changes to the scheme are:

  • The requirement for all dental professionals to have a personal development plan (PDP);
  • An increase in the number of verifiable hours for most professional titles and the requirement to spread the hours more evenly across the five year cycle;
  • Dental professionals no longer have to declare non-verifiable CPD to the GDC;
  • The requirement to make an annual statement of CPD hours completed, even if zero hours have been completed for that year;
  • The requirement to align CPD activity with specific development outcomes;
  • The requirement for professionals to plan CPD activity according to their individual “field(s) of practice”.

CPD for dental professionals: FAQs on GDC website

The GDC has recently updated the CPD FAQs  page on the GDC website by adding a new Q&A in relation to documentary evidence for verifiable CPD.  (The final question in the first block)
Please note all the FAQs and feel free to share throughout your networks.

Together with the GDC’s guidance on CPD for dental professionals, the CPD FAQs page of the GDC’s website provides a range of information about our requirements for continuing professional development.  We have also recently published an advice sheet on  Quality Controls for Verifiable CPD .

Professionalism at Courses

It has come to our attention that there have been some instances of unprofessional behaviour on courses provided by the Health Education West Midlands Postgraduate Dental Team.

This has included attendees repeatedly arriving late for courses, talking during a presentation and general disruption during the course for the other delegates.

As stated in the GDC standards you have an individual responsibility to behave professionally and follow these principles at all times.  GDC Standard 9.1 states that registrants must ‘Ensure that your conduct, both at work and in your personal life, justifies patients’ trust in you and the public’s trust in the dental profession.’

Unprofessional behaviour at courses is not acceptable and may result in a delegate being restricted from attendance at future courses and possible referral to the GDC.  We understand that this behaviour is from the minority of delegates and the majority do behave in a professional manner.
