Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine
Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine (PHEM) is a sub-specialty of Anaesthetics and Emergency Medicine, and from February 2015 a sub-specialty of Intensive Care Medicine and Acute Medicine.
PHEM relates to the medical care of seriously ill or injured patients at scene, before they reach hospital, or during emergency transfer to or between hospitals. It represents a unique and exciting area of medical practice compared to hospital work with the tempo of decision making, the hazards faced at incident scenes, the isolated working conditions, the environmental challenges, the resource limitations and the case mix of patients. High levels of knowledge, practical skills and non-technical skills are required to work in the pre-hospital team. There are few medical jobs which can be as challenging but rewarding on a daily basis.
Here in the West Midlands we have supported PHEM trainees since February 2013.
