Trauma & Orthopaedics

The West Midlands is a very large geographical area with a huge population. This enables comprehensive training to be provided in all aspects of trauma and orthopaedic surgery. The Deanery has a history of being forward thinking and innovative in terms of education and training. The training programmes have always proved highly successful.

Within the West Midlands there are three separate Trauma & Orthopaedic Training Programmes:

  • Birmingham
  • Oswestry/Stoke
  • Warwick

Currently the trauma and orthopaedic curriculum is to be delivered over 8 years. During ST1 to ST4 the emphasis is on orthopaedic trauma and emergency work. Increasing exposure to orthopaedic sub specialties i.e. joint replacement surgery, arthroscopic surgery and soft tissue knee reconstruction, spinal surgery, children’s orthopaedic surgery, hand surgery, shoulder and elbow surgery, musculoskeletal oncology, foot and ankle surgery, will occur during ST3 – ST7. The training programmes should prepare the majority of candidates to complete the Intercollegiate Examination in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery during ST7.

Training after completing the FRCS (Tr&Orth) will include senior trauma experience and advanced sub specialty training.

Where appropriate Out of Programme Training can be arranged for senior trainees seeking specialist experience.
