The Dermatology West Midlands Training Programme

A Description of the Programme
The West Midlands is one of the larger training schemes in the UK with 23 WTE training posts. 

During the 4 year training 24-36 months are spent in Birmingham hospitals and the remaining time in other teaching hospitals in the region.

Approval training posts are located at University Hospital Birmingham (including Birmingham Children’s Hospital) (5), City Hospital, Birmingham (4), Solihull Hospital (4), University Hospital, Coventry (4), Warwick Hospital (2), Worcester hospitals (2), Mid-Staffordshire (1), Walsall (1) and Dudley (1).

The Training Cirriculum
The Dermatology curriculum is comprehensively covered in the 4 year training within the region with the exception of specialist training in photo dermatology which has to be obtained by placement elsewhere.

Training Results
Results of the Deanery trainee survey (JEST) and GMC surveys have been excellent in recent years as has Deanery led inspection of training.

The Region provides particularly strong training in Paediatric Dermatology, Skin cancer, lymphoma and dermatological surgery, Vulval disorders, Contact Dermatitis, and Dermatopathology.

Rotation takes place in May i.e. ST trainees appointed in August commonly move the following May.

Particular clinical experience in the management of toxic epidermal necrolysis is provided at University Hospital Birmingham and both Birmingham Childrens Hospital and Solihull Hospital have dedicated epidermolysis bullosa services. 

Training in lasers is provided at City Hospital.

There is a post CCT Fellowship in Paediatric Dermatology at the Children’s Hospital in addition.
