Salary & Terms and Conditions of service


National Terms and Conditions for Public Health Doctors in the NHS at trainee level.  SpTs are on national T&C’s under agenda for change as currently described in Pay Circular. AfC (1/2007).  Salary is accordance with these terms & conditions of service as stated on the NHS employers website.

Hours of work

All placements comply with European Working Time Directive regulations. Full time trainees who have an on call/out of hours frequency of zero ( ie do no on call ) will work less than 40 hours per week on average between 8.00 am to 7.00 pm Monday to Friday  and receive a basic salary and those who do on call a maximum of 48 hours per week on average and in accordance with (and not exceeding) Band IC or FC of medical T&Cs and similarly AfC 2007/1.  These hours do not include time spent on private study.

Less than Full Time Training

The training scheme is committed to less than full time training for people who have well founded individual reasons for doing so.


Employer

Currently apart from those employed by Universities (Warwick and Birmingham ) all registrars will be employed by the successor to Walsall PCT.   (For placements outside of the West Midlands a local employer for the placement is arranged).   So apart from those placed for training in Walsall PCT, others are effectively on agreed training secondments to another placement locations.

Removal expenses

The reimbursement of removal expenses will be at the discretion of the Postgraduate Dean and subject to employer policy.  You should not commit yourself to any expenditure in connection with relocation before first obtaining advice and approval otherwise you may incur costs which you might be unable to claim. Trainees are expected to live within a reasonable distance from their working base for reasons of health and safety. Any trainee who chooses to live a significant distance from their working base may not receive travel expenses in lieu of relocation.

Regulation & Yearly Assessment

In common with all Higher Specialist Training programmes, we have a yearly assessment process.  Trainees must make satisfactory progress during the year in order to continue into the next part of the scheme.  Any problems with training should be apparent through regular appraisals leading up to the annual assessments.

Specialty Registrars’ training is subject to the guidance and rules currently in place from the General Medical Council and recorded in the current “Gold Guide” (available at http://www.mmc.nhs.uk/pdf/Gold%20Guide%202010%20Fourth%20Edition%20v08.pdf)

Study Leave in the West Midlands

Trainees have a nominal budget to spend on courses and conferences as determined by the Postgraduate Dean and the PHS.  In addition, there are a series of free courses run by the training scheme that cover core skills that are not covered in the academic training.  These are often participatory courses.  Recent examples of this kind of training including writing skills, media interviews, CV and interview skills, presentation skills.  Trainees give feedback and video is used to develop these skills which are important in public health.

The arrangements described in this document are subject to change as the service develops and changes as appropriate will be arranged by the Public Health School.
