Who can attend a course?

The following courses arranged for the West Midlands are open to all registered dentists and Dental Care Professionals (DCPs), including those working in the Salaried Primary Dental Care Services. Courses organised under Section 63 of the NHS Act will be advertised through the regional Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) in the vicinity, as will any additional courses not shown in this booklet. There is no charge for attending courses for holders of PCT contracts or for those who work within the Salaried Primary Dental Care Services or for Dental Care Professionals. Practitioners not holding a PCT contract should contact the Clinical Tutor at the centre concerned. There will be a charge for catering received and materials used on courses.

Some of the courses will be repeated at several different postgraduate centres throughout the region. This will facilitate local attendance by practitioners. In addition, it allows maximum exposure of "teaching packages" once they have been organised.

Postgraduate Database

"LIFELONG LEARNING - Recertification for the Dental Profession".

In order to comply with the requirements of the General Dental Council, IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT PRACTITIONERS SIGN IN AT ALL COURSES ATTENDED. This will enable attendance at continuing postgraduate education events to be recorded on the Postgraduate Database.

A print-out of recorded attendances can be obtained from the Workforce Deanery Dental Team, (Tel. 0121 695 2588).

The database for courses at Birmingham Dental Hospital commenced on 1 October 1997 and was expanded to cover all postgraduate centres in the West Midlands from 1 October 2000. 

Claiming CPD, Travel & Subsistence

FP84-0306 “Certificate of Attendance/Claim for Travel/Subsistence Expenses for Section 63 & Vocational Training Courses”, are no-longer normally available however if you do need one please contact your centre administration preferably by e-mail.

This is a new service specifically designed to provide access to formal and informal training and career development resources for the whole healthcare workforce, at anytime from anywhere.

NHS local Learning is a digital environment created to support NHS organisations to deliver on their education and training commitments and priorities, enabling access to learning and development opportunities to support a blended educational approach.

NHS Local Learning can be accessed via http://learning.nhslocal.nhs.uk/ where courses of particular interest for the Dental Team include:

• Safeguarding Children
• Bullying and Harassment
• Alcohol Identification and Brief Advice (IBA) 

Please note that if you require evidence of completion you will need to take a screen grab of the final completion screen as a certificate is not currently offered. (To take a screen grab select the Print Scrn button on the keyboard, you can then paste this into a word document and save the document or print it)

We have 900 core CPD e learning licenses for registered Dentists and DCP's

The e-learning modules cover all core topics that dentists and DCPs are required to complete as part of their CPD cycle. There is no cost for these licenses however we respectfully ask that respondents observe the notice below.

PLEASE NOTE:

You only have 12 months to complete all 5 modules. This will take approximately 24 hours. We recommend that professionals who have completed the mandatory training modules for their current GDC cycle do not register for this training as this will be duplication and will remove the opportunity from those people who need this training now. We hope to continue providing e-learning for core CPD in future years for members of the dental team who will need this in future cycles.

Once registered your use of this e learning will be monitored to prevent colleagues from blocking access to this resource from others, but then not using it themselves.
