Associate Dean for Dental Education & Performance Development

Jane Davies-Slowik qualified from Liverpool in 1980 and has worked predominantly in the Community and Salaried Dental Services in Liverpool and in the West Midlands. She is a Specialist in Special Care Dentistry in Wolverhampton Special Care Dental Service. She has a keen interest in improving the oral health of the community and reducing inequalities.

She has always had a strong interest in postgraduate education and achieved her Masters in Community Dental Health in 1988, and a Diploma in Dental Public Health in 1986. She completed her Certificate in Postgraduate Medical Education from Birmingham University in 2012 and an ILM level 7 Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring in 2013. She is a long standing honorary lecturer in the Department of Dental Public Health at Birmingham Dental School.

 

Jane started work at the Dental Deanery in 2002 when she was appointed as Retaining and Returning Advisor to support dentists taking a career break while on their break and in their return to dentistry. This role has developed and Jane is Associate Dean for Performance Development supporting a range of dentists including those taking career breaks and those with performance difficulties. In 2013 she started work as Associate Dental Dean for Dental Team Education as is responsible for the programme of  postgraduate education (Section 63 courses) for the West Midlands retaining her role as Postgraduate Tutor for the salaried dental services.

 

Dental Tutor for Hereford

Will qualified in 1985 and after a few years working around London he moved to his present practice in Hereford twenty years ago. Will is now a partner and the practice has expanded considerably over the years offering a full range of treatment mainly under the NHS. As well as being the postgraduate tutor for Hereford he has been a V.T. trainer five times and is a part time Clinical Assistant in the maxillofacial department of Hereford County Hospital.

Dental Tutor for Warwick  

Richard is a registered specialist in orthodontics, with a practice in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire. He is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and his PhD thesis researched Interprofessional Education in orthodontics. He is an examiner for The Royal College of Surgeons of England, The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, is Head of Dentistry Studies and Director of Orthodontics at The University of Warwick.  Richard has a long-standing commitment to dental education for the whole team and lectures both within the UK and internationally. Leamington Spa Orthodontics is an outreach teaching centre and as postgraduate dental tutor, Richard is keen to encourage all members of the dental team to continue their professional development.

Dental Tutor for Worcester and Birmingham Dental Hospital

Marie-Claire qualified from Birmingham University in 1987 and has worked predominantly in general dental practice since then, both as a Practice Principle and as an Associate in Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

 

Marie-Claire was involved for several years in Vocational Training as a trainer and since 2002 has been the Tutor for CPD at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital and more recently helping to run courses at the Dental Hospital and City Hospitals in  Birmingham . She sits on the Oral Health Advisory Group for Worcestershire and the Restorative MCN at the Dental Hospital.

 

In 1997 Marie-Claire completed the Diploma In General Dental Practice , the precursor to the Faculty of General Dental Practice MFGDP Diploma examination. In 2004 and 2009 she successfully completed firstly a Certificate in Learning and Teaching for Health professionals from Birmingham University and then a  3 year Diploma in Postgraduate Dental Studies from Bristol University. Most recently she successfully gained   the Institute of Leadership and Management Level 7 in Coaching and Mentoring qualification.

 

 

Dental Tutor for Telford and Burton

 Angela qualified as a Dental Nurse in 1982 and then went on to gain a Diploma in Dental Health Education and Dental Radiography and CMI Level 5 Diploma in Management.

She has been a Practice Manager of two Dental practices in Telford Shropshire for the last 10 years where she lives. She has been working for the West Midlands Deanery since December 2006 and provided CPD courses throughout Shropshire and Staffordshire since her appointment.
Nearer to home she started the first peer group for Dental Nurses in Wellington which holds meetings every 3-4 months throughout the year for local practices.
In September this year Angela is planning a Dental Charity Trek to Nepal to assist a local charity SmileHigh deliver dental treatment to remote villages in the Himalayas. This is going to be a challenge not only to raise the funds to enable the trek to happen but also a  personal ambition to reach the base camp of Everest .

Dental Tutor for Stafford

 Dr Suleman qualified from Trinity College Dublin in 1980. 

 She has been a practice principal since 1982, single handed, but relocated to Stafford and was in partnership in 1984 with another Irish graduate. She and her partner were involved in the pilot scheme for VT training in 1986. As a direct result of this successful venture, she was asked to present seminars to VT groups in ‘Time Management and Staff Training’ in 3 VT centres, annually over the last 20 years.

Her experience of professional learning was gained by being a member of an independent society, The North Staffs Society of Dental Surgeons. This society held a scientific meeting monthly and various social functions to bring local dentists together. She was president of the Society for 1 year and served on the Committee. 

She was also involved in Peer review groups for 4 years, both as a participant and an organiser with other local dentists.

In 2000 she successfully applied to become a Dental Tutor based in Stafford, where this previous experience in NSSDS was invaluable in organising a course programmes for dentists and teams. The Clinical Skills room had become a centre for many visiting dental groups , she has expanded the equipment levels to be able to hold a variety of Hands on courses. and continues to run Hands on courses as part of her own programme.

 

In April 2010 she was appointed as Dental Clinical Governance Lead for South West Staffs PCT, this role was expanded  in 2012 when she became a Dental Practice Advisor, for LAT, where she is involved in maintaining quality standards in practice, advising local dentists, and reviewing practice audits and conducting  practice visits offering advice as a wet fingered practitioner who understands the difficulties of running a practice.

 

In her spare time she is a  keen golfer; she runs the NSSDS Golf Day annually , and still holds the record for being a 3 times winner ,and is a competitive club member. She loves cooking, baking and travel.

 

Dental Tutor for Birmingham City Hospital and DCP Tutor for Birmingham Dental Hospital 

 

Jo qualified as a Dental Nurse in 1980 at Birmingham Dental Hospital and has over 30 years’ experience in dental care, administration, training and education within Dental Hospital, General Dental Practice and Specialist Orthodontic Practice settings.  She has been working as a Dental Team Educator with HEE WM since 2006 responsible for organising CPD programmes at City Hospital Postgraduate Centre and Birmingham Dental Hospital.

Jo is a part of the Central Development Team based at St Chads Court and is also on the HEE WM list of mentors.

Dental Tutor for Coventry

 

Sara qualified as a Dental Nurse in 1999 and has worked at an NHS practice for around 20 years and gained further qualifications in Radiography, Oral health Education, Practice Management, Assessing, Teaching and has recently achieved a Postgraduate Certificate in Education for Health Professionals from Birmingham University.

 

Sara has been working for the West Midlands Deanery since 2006 and is responsible for organising CPD programmes for the Dental Team at Coventry Postgraduate Centre. Sara has also recently joined the Central Development Team based at St Chads and is also on the Health Education West Midlands list of mentors after completing a mentoring course.

 Dental Tutor for Shrewsbury

 

Colin is a General Dental Practitioner (with an interest in Restorative Dentistry), working in a mixed NHS/Private practice in Birmingham. He is currently an examiner for the MJDF examinations and was formerly the MJDF Divisional Tutor for the West Midlands. He is a Foundation Dentist (FD) Trainer and has been so for a number of years and is also a registered Mentor for the West Midlands Deanery. He lectures for the MSc programme in Restorative and Implant Dentistry at the University of Warwick.

 

Colin is very keen on postgraduate education. He has achieved the prestigious award of Fellowship - FFGDP from the Royal College of Surgeons of England and has a MSc in Restorative Dentistry.  He is interested in postgraduate teaching and helping other colleagues to develop their careers.
